Progressive StreetWear in Magic....

I spent all day yesterday walking the Magic show in Vegas. Must say that they show was lack luster. There wasn't really any traffic roaming through the aisles. The "progressive streetwear" section in Magic was pushed back to the end of the convention center. I think that the powers that be did this because they wanted traffic to move through the entire show to the back of the convention center to the area that had the most energy. Unfortunately a lot of the traffic got lost in the middle of the muck and mire of random tee shirt brands that are trying to find there way into the true streetwear market. Hopefully the show will do better today, but that I guess that depends on their enthusiasm of the economic future of the country....

Garmin Nuvifone

Garmin made a surprise announcement last night of a new iPhone competitor. nuvifone (rhymes with “MovieFone”… coincidence?) has an impressive feature set, including:
Quad-band GSM mobile phone
3G HSDPA
3.5-inch touchscreen interface
HTML Web browser
WiFi
Multi-network instant messaging
MMS media messaging
Still & video camera
Automatically geotags photo with the latitude and longitude reference of where the image was taken
MP3 and MPEG4/AAC player
Garmin Online service with constantly-updating information:
Real-time traffic
Fuel prices
Stock prices
Sport scores
News reports
Local events
Weather forecasts
Google applications
Gmail
Google local search
Proximity, location based search (coffee shops near me)
Access to millions of geo-located landmark and sightseeing photographs available through Google’s Panoramio picture sharing site
Best-in-breed GPS capabilities
Preloaded maps of North America, Eastern and Western Europe, or both
Turn-by-turn, voice-prompted directions
Speaks the names of the streets
“Where am I?” feature displays your latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and gas stations.
Find your car in an unfamiliar spot or crowded parking lot by automatically marking the position in which it was last removed from the vehicle mount.

nuvifone is based on Garmin’s proprietary OS and according to Electronista the Google applications allow it to search for local businesses, check traffic patterns and weather. Photos (or videos) taken with the built-in camera are automatically geotagged for positioning in location-based services.

Garmin hasn’t announced the price or carrier partner yet but expect details to follow shortly.

Time off for Magic

It has been sometime since I last wrote on this blog. The main reason being that MAGIC (tradeshow) is upon us and there is so much to do. For those that do not know what Magic is,.... it is one of the fashion industries big dances of dollars and sense. This is where all the hard work that designers and there ilk have worked towards. Magic is held twice a year at the Las Vegas Convention center. Clothing brands from all over the world gather to showcase there wears and try to get orders from retailers (ranging from local mom & pop shops to department stores).
Many other brands have found there ways to Las Vegas to put their own spin on tradeshow circuit by concentrating on there own niche market. You have Project, Pool, Mansion and a bunch of retailers that even show in their private suites in order to redirect the traffic from Magic.
The streetwear market has been the biggest buzz of Magic so far, as the main floor has become a parking lot of brands of yesterday. Long gone is the reign of the walking billboards (clothing saturated with oversized logos) and matchy matchy garments (looking like you were wearing a Hip-Hop video uniform). Funny enough the isles in the Urban section of Magic looks very similar to days when garmentos ruled with there rows of polyester slacks and cheap suits.

The reason for the MVMNT

The main reason that I started the MVMNT (www.pelnyc.com) was to provide a forum for the people that are moving the industry that we admire to tell us about themselves. Usually we find the focus is upon the owners of the company and not on the team members that are actually pushing it forward. It is so typical that we can name various products from our favorite brands but can rearly name the collective minds behind it. We rearly know the names of the designer, their team, the sales reps, marketing and even the first stores that broke the product. Think about it in the hight of the AF1 and Dunk revolution how many of us could members of the design team. Hopefully my contribution will help them to drop a couple of jewels to the MVMNT that is always on time!


I thought that it was time for me to come from behind creative desk and open up a bit about myself and my persona. I will be posting thoughts and other randomness on this post. Hope to read all of your future comments.
